Dr. Rosen has given me permission to upload to The Space Show blog Chapter 2 from Success Stories In Satellite Systems which is an AIAA book published in 2008.? Chapter 2 is titled ?SYNCOM: World?s First Geostationary Satellite.?? This is Dr. Rosen?s own story of SYNCOM from idea conception to success as he is recognized as the father of the geostationary satellite.? Dr. Rosen started our discussion by going back in time to the conditions and the political situation of the time.? Sputnik was orbiting Earth and the advanced radar unit Dr. Rosen was working on was suddenly cancelled when it was discovered that the Soviet Union was replacing its bombers with ICBMs.? Dr. Rosen?s department at Hughes was now challenged to find new and appropriate technologies building upon the radar technology as it was important to keep the team employed.? One project suggested was the design and development of a communications satellite system as existing communications were problematic at best, expensive, and transoceanic television was impossible.? Dr. Rosen tells us how he expanded the idea, put together an amazing team to develop the concept, and how his team had to struggle and fight for sponsors, funding, and backing.? One of the issues we talked about was the spin configuration and thruster development.? Dr. Rosen talked about the rocket limitations at the time and how they planned on using a Scout sounding rocket.? As it turned out, the Delta was being worked on and when the satellites were ready for launch, a Delta was used.? In fact, once they knew that the launch would be on a Delta, they did some redesign of their satellite to add in more redundancy given the Delta could handle significantly more mass than a Scout.? Dr. Rosen talked about many of the challenges including the need to have a light weight traveling wave tube amplifier.? We also talked about the competing LEO comsat programs proposed at the time and Dr. Rosen had
some interesting things to say about these types of systems, especially for today with modern technology.? I asked Dr. Rosen why the early SYNCOM system had a five year life.? Don?t miss his explanation for this.? A listener asked him to compare the early geo satellites to a Direct TV satellite of today.? Again, you will find the comparison most interesting.? This is an important part of our space history and Dr. Rosen with the team he assembled made it happen, from idea to reality.? Our communications and world were forever changed because of his success.

Jurgen Klinsmann had a few things to say on U.S. Soccer this morning. Some of it good ? and some of it quite concerning.
The good is on Clint Dempsey?s groin injury.
?Clint has a minor groin injury which should be fine within the next couple of days. We?re going to take it a bit easy in the beginning, and from there we don?t expect any problems,? Klinsmann said.
The not so good is about promising defender Timmy Chandler, who isn?t coming into camp.
I think it?s time for all U.S. Socccer fans to say this about the promising outside back. And say it out loud so it sinks in. ?He?s just not that into us.?
I have had long conversations with Timmy about where he is in his professional career and his commitment to playing international football. He has expressed his appreciation for all the opportunities we have given him, but he also feels at this point he needs to take a break. It?s disappointing not having him as a part of the team at this important juncture of building our team, but ultimately a player must decide what is best for him. The door is certainly not closed on Timmy, but in the moment we move on without him.?
I spoke to U.S. Soccer spokesman Michael Kammarman, who referred all questions to Klinsmann.
In the past, Chandler?s words and actions have always indicated he was ?all in? for the U.S. cause, never mind the dual citizenship and the fact that he grew up in Germany.
But recall that last summer he kept his distance from the U.S. camp. And more importantly, recall that he has yet to play in an official FIFA tournament. That means he?s still eligible to appear for Germany. And at 22 years old, it?s quite likely that he?s still holding out hope of appearing for his native country.
If he comes to this camp and appears in one of the upcoming qualifiers, he?s tied to the United States.
U.S. Soccer may or may not continue to believe that Chandler is in the personnel mix. But if I?m wagering, I?m saying his future in the U.S. shirt stands highly in doubt.
It?s hard to see this odd situation any other way (a player who prefers not to play internationally); it looks for all the world like he?s holding out for Germany.

UFC veteran Magalhaes won the M-1 light heavyweight belt last April and defended it in October, but then found himself in a long, public squabble with M-1 management. He and M-1 director of operations Evgeni Kogan have exchanged nasty insults over Twitter after Magalhaes was not happy with the fights the Russian-based promotion was making, and Kogan supposedly coached one of Magalhaes’ opponents from ringside, a huge no-no for a promoter who should be unbiased.
Since Magalhaes said he is through his contract and wants to move on from the promotion, he has no reason to hold on to the belt. He put it on eBay, starting bids at $0.09. At the time of writing, it’s up to $2,605. Magalhaes tweeted the link and told Kogan, “Hey buddy, you wanted your belt back? #placeyourbid it’s on @ebay

NVIDIA, Intellectual Ventures partner to acquire 4G patents from IPWireless
It’s hard to read the word ‘patent’ and not leap immediately to ‘infringement,’ given the tech industry’s recent track record. But in this rare case, access to that oft-contested IP is being spread like love — very expensive love. Under the terms of a joint agreement, NVIDIA and Intellectual Ventures have acquired nearly 500 patents from IPWireless, some of which pertain to essential tech for LTE, LTE-Advanced and 3G / 4G, bolstering the duo’s inroads into the mobile space. Though the exact financials weren’t disclosed, IPWireless will retain the right to utilize that portfolio royalty-free for as long as it chooses, while NVIDIA will have to license whatever patents it didn’t acquire from its partner. With official word of LTE Tegra 3 chips being pushed off into 2013, this latest business handshake’s paving the way for an uncontested market debut. Check out the official PR after the break.

I think it would really inspire everyone to give the rap business a try, because if what she made passes for a single, then there’s a good chance everyone can do it. Please don’t misunderstand me. As a woman, I am very aware of how amazing her career in tennis has been. She overcame huge racial barriers, and found a successful career in a very snooty sport, known to be popular amongst the wealthy, country-club crowd.
